Ann Hartka received the first Heart of Gold Award from the Sunshine From Darkness "Diamond in the Rough" Luncheon on March 24. Ann is the founder of the Compeer Affiliate Program of Sarasota at Senior Friendship Centers.
The Sunshine From Darkness committee was so impressed with Compeer’s nominee for the 2011 Diamond award that they decided to create an award to be given to an individual who provides support to people who are challenged by mental illness, helps to create awareness and to erase the stigma.
Ann Hartka, a Senior Friendship Centers (SFC) older adult participant, approached Br. William Geenen (Founder of SFC), about developing a Compeer Affiliate in Sarasota. Ann recognized the impact of Compeer’s volunteer driven program in creating successful outcomes for her cousin, Jeff, and wanted to “make this happen” in Sarasota
