Tech Boot Camp is an opportunity for beginners to learn to use the latest technology from computers to smart phones, iPads and more. This award-winning program uses an intergenerational approach, with student mentors providing one-on-one, hands-on tutoring to compliment classes taught by professionals. Whether you are able to volunteer for a few hours a day, once a month, or once a week, it’s an exciting opportunity to help older adults in medical need in our community while working with an outstanding professional team. Compeer Gulfcoast seeks $10,000 match for challenge grant. Housed at Senior Friendship Centers, Compeer matches adults in the recovery phase of a diagnosed mental health disorder in friendship with a caring volunteer. Compeer serves as a complement to therapy which empowers people to become more socially integrated and combat the effects of mental illness, from loneliness to isolation and low self worth.

Senior Friendship Centers is proud to be among 100 non profits selected for the 36-Hour Giving Challenge March 27 at 6 a.m. to March 28 at 6 p.m. During this time period a 1:1 donor match up to a total of $501,000 made possible through the Patterson Foundation and special grants form the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Gulf Coast Community Foundation and the Manatee Community Foundation, will be offered on a first-come, first served basis.

Senior Friendship Centers has received a $5,000 from the Linnie E. Dalbeck Memorial Foundation Trust to underwrite program support for Powerful Tools for Caregivers. This program addresses the needs of individuals caring for a frail elder through using Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six week educational curriculum teaching caregivers how to cope with the challenges and joys of caregiving.

Health officials are urging adults age 50 and older to get vaccinated against shingles. Caused by the same virus associated with chickenpox, shingles is more common and serious in older adults. The Jewish Federation of Collier County honored the Frieindship Health Clinic in Collier County with the 2011 Annual Human Needs Award. Staffed by volunteer physicians dentists, nurses and clinic aides, the clinic services people who are 50+ and low income.

Season of Sharing has raised and distributed more than $5.5 million since its inception. Last year alone, Season of Sharing funds helped more than 2,500 individuals and families put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. Season of Sharing was founded by the Herald-Tribune Media Group in 2000 to provide emergency assistance to families on the brink of homelessness and is administered through The Community Foundation of Sarasota County; 100 percent of the money collected is distributed to those in need. It’s no secret that Sarasota County, with more than a third of the population over the age of 65, is a leader on the leading edge of the “Age Wave” sweeping the world’s population. That’s part of what attracted KBS Television, a Korean television station in Seoul, to elect to include Senior Friendship Centers in an upcoming two-part documentary series on Living Well to 100, for a special program similar to Sixty Minutes or 20/20. The documentary will look at the state of positive aging in Amsterdam, Seoul, Korea and Tokyo Japan.

RSVP Sarasota County will unveil new volunteer opportunities for programs serving veterans at a special salute to those who have served our country in the military following the annual Veterans Day Parade downtown Sarasota on Nov. 11. The celebration begins at 12:15 and will feature Dr. G. Kurt Piehler, new director of the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience at Florida State University, as keynote speaker. The colorful event will include presentation of colors by the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida Home-schooled Troop, and a grand finale by the Sarasota Military Academy Drumline. SFC's Health Clinic Collier has served Collier county since 1985, providing care for seniors in need, and saving the community thousands of dollars in emergency room care. The clinic had more than 5,000 patient visits in 2010 and helped secure medications valued at more than $118,000 from pharmaceutical companies and their foundations. There is a 20% increase in patient demand per year over the last four years. Conservatively estimated value of the professional services exceeds one million dollars per year. The demand for services is depleting the endowment funding the clinic, and the Collier County Medical Society is issuing a call to action for support for its services.

State emergency management officials are urging all Florida residents to prepare for a potential hurricane or tropical storm impact during the 2011 Hurricane Season. Forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are anticipating above-average tropical activity this year, with the formation of as many as 12 to 18 named storms and 6 to 10 hurricanes. Florida residents are urged to develop a family disaster plan and build a disaster supply kit before a potential tropical system may threaten the state.
